Border Collies are workaholics. They absolutely will not stop until made
to do so. This can be dangerous and could lead to hyperthermia / heat stroke. Be aware of the symptoms (excess salivation, heavy
panting or collapse are just a few) Provide access to plenty of water and shade and keep physical workouts to a
minimum on hot days.
Vaccinating your pet is essential in keeping it healthy. Although a breeder may
give your puppy an initial vaccine, the vaccine will need to be boostered at least 2 times. New puppy
owners must visit a licensed veterinarian who will recommend the appropriate boosters and start a vaccine schedule
for your pet. After that, yearly visits to your vet and vaccinations are needed to keep your pet in good health.
Unprotected pets can contract heartworms at any time. Many pet owners
think that heartworm prevention is not needed because their pets stay indoors. Because heartworms are
contracted by infected mosquitos it only takes one bite to start the heartworm lifecycle in your pet. Heartworm prevention
can be started at your first vet visit with your new puppy. Heartworm disease can be treated however, the process is
extremely expensive and drawn out over many months. In some cases the treatment it is not effective and the
dog can not be saved. In most cases it causes permanent lung damage. Check with your veterinarian about the risks
of Heartworm disease in your area.
Border Collies are ACTIVE. If you are looking for a sedate lap dog then a Border
Collie is not for you. If not kept emotionally and physically stimulated they may develop obsessive/compulsive
behaviors causing you and your family a very unpleasant experience. Please make sure this is the right breed
for you.
